Black Lives Matter activist Deray Mckesson endorses Clinton

In an op-ed in The Washington Post Wednesday, Mckesson explained why he was finally backing Clinton. He has met with Clinton multiple times over the past year but has also made his disagreements with her known. “When Clinton started this campaign, she didn’t appear to understand the urgency of the need to address racism. When I first met with her in October 2015, she had not yet released comprehensive policy positions dealing with racial justice. She seemed slow to grasp why it was important to act with comprehensive proposed solutions. The unrest and activism over the last two years has undoubtedly pushed Clinton, specifically on key issues that she and other Democrats otherwise would not have addressed as forcefully as the party’s platform does: priv

Think your friend is in trouble? Facebook could help

Image
(Photo: Karen Bleier, AFP/Getty Images) If you see a disturbing post from a Facebook friend, you don’t have to leave the social network for help. This week, Facebook’s Safety Center, a resource page with tips on bullying prevention and suicide hotlines, became available in more than 50 languages. Aside from informational pages, Facebook's report tool is ever-evolving. With the tool, users can flag friends’ posts to get advice on how to personally talk to that friend or ask Facebook to send that friend resources. To use the tool, go to the concerning post, click the down arrow in the top right corner, select “Report Post” and click “I think it shouldn’t be on Facebook.” Then, select what is wrong with the post. For users concerned about a suicidal friend, they can select: “It’s threatening, violent or suicidal.” The following window asks to choose a type, where an option is “self-injury or suicide.” A window then pops up, prompting users t

Uncle Sam goes for gold, too: Up to $9,900 per Olympic gold medal

Image
(Photo: GABRIEL BOUYS, AFP/Getty Images) Michael Phelps swims fast, but not fast enough to beat Uncle Sam, who awaits him at the finish line each time he wins a medal. His total income tax bill for the 2016 Games? Up to about $55,000 for his five golds and one silver. Olympic athletes who bring home medals also bring home cash — $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze — paid for by the United States Olympic Committee. Like any prize winner, from a jackpot hitter to a Nobel Prize recipient, the athletes are taxed because Olympic medals and cash bonuses are considered income, said Steven Gill, associate professor of accounting at San Diego State University. The maximum possible "victory tax" on the bonus for each gold medal, using the top tax rate of 39.6% for the nation's highest earners, is $9,900, according to Americans for Tax Reform . For silver, it's $5,940, and for bronze it's $3,960. Athletes in lower

Clinton's best surrogate is the other Obama

Image
(Photo: MARK RALSTON, AFP/Getty Images) WASHINGTON — As the approval ratings for presidential candidates go lower, first lady Michelle Obama's go high. Mrs. Obama, the reluctant campaigner who can't wait to move out of the White House, has suddenly become Hillary Clinton's secret weapon, capturing headlines with passionate and personal speeches promoting the former secretary of State and castigating her opponent. White House aides say the first lady is more valuable on the campaign trail than even the president — "probably the most powerful advocate that Secretary Clinton has," said Press Secretary Josh Earnest. Just as President Obama's effort to get Clinton elected has made him the most active lame-duck presidential campaigner in history, historians say Mrs. Obama is perhaps the most active first lady to campaign for someone other than her husband. Before Clinton — who is, after all, a former first lady and senator herself

Five matchups that will define NFL Week 7: Can Eagles get to Sam Bradford?

Image
TODAY Sports (Photo: Brace Hemmelgarn, Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sport) Even as the Minnesota Vikings enter Week 7 at 5-0, there's no mystery about the biggest vulnerability of the NFL's lone undefeated team. An overextended offensive line with both starting offensive tackles on injured reserve could be costly for a team that has weathered a series of early season blows. Now the unit will have to find a way to stand up to the Philadelphia Eagles' formidable front four to keep quarterback Sam Bradford protected against his former team on Sunday. A bye week gave Vikings coach Mike Zimmer time to retool, and the team added veteran offensive tackle Jake Long. But Minnesota will have to find a way to stand up to an Eagles defense that can generate pressure with its front four alone.

Could one-and-done be an issue again?

(Photo: Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports) ATLANTA -- Ben Simmons spent a lone season in college basketball at LSU, trying to fit in with immense skill and share the ball, and it prompted more debate about the NBA’s continued push to ban teenagers from the league. Is it justifiable forcing a player such as Simmons to play in college when he obviously has greater skills? If NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had his way, Simmons would have been back at LSU for his sophomore year.  Simmons, 19, was taken first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers. In one of the early scrimmages with the team, he suffered a broken bone in his foot and is out for several weeks to start the season.

Outrage after man says women shouldn't wear yoga pants in public

Time_Sports (Photo: Stock photo, Hemera Technologies, Getty Images) BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) — Women clad in yoga pants plan to parade through a coastal Rhode Island town in protest of a man who said the attire looks tacky and ridiculous. The women plan to hold a parade Sunday in Barrington to show they can wear whatever they want. Their outrage is in response to a letter that town resident Alan Sorrentino wrote to the Barrington Times about his dislike of yoga pants. He said women over age 20 shouldn’t wear them. “Yoga pants belong in the yoga studio,” he wrote. “What’s next? Wearing a “Speedo” to the supermarket? Imagine if men did that. Yuck!” Sorrentino wrote that it’s “bizarre and disturbing” to see the outfits on “mature, adult women,” noting that it’s “usually paired with a blousy top and a pony tail hairdo.”
